Ford is not being shy about the 2011 V-6 Mustang. The 4.0L in the 2010 mustang is a dinosaur, being based on the Cologne engine that has been produced since 1968. The new 3.7L DOHC engine is making roughly the same amount of horsepower as the 2005 GT (but not as much torque.) Combined with a lighter curb weight and a six speed manual, it’s sure to be a real performance bargain.

Ford however, also wants to emphasize that the V-6 promises to deliver the up to 31 mpg on the highway, which will make it the most fuel-efficient pony car on the market.

In order to do this, the company is combining the two elements into one big contest, called the "Mustang 1000 Lap Challenge."

The plan’s goal is to drive a 2011 V-6 Mustang around the Bristol Motor Speedway for 1000 laps with only one tank of gas. People can enter into the contest and guess how many laps the Mustang will go with one tank of gas. The winner of the contest will get their very own V-6 Mustang.

Sound easy enough, but this isn’t like counting a bunch of jelly beans in a jar. Since Bristol is an oval track, variances in driving style will be greatly reduced. Still, variables like weather, tire pressure and speed will all be a factor in determining the outcome.

The contest will start on June 23, around the time the 2011 Mustangs should be available to order. Follow the link below to see details.
