These comments come just six weeks after he was quoted saying “I think you can pretty much count on a right-hand drive Camaro. The Camaro at some point will be factory right-hand drive… built in the plant in Canada and shipped to right-hand drive markets from Canada.” at the Detroit Auto Show.
So after only six weeks a decision has been made to pretty much scrap the right-hand drive Camaro for foreign buyers who were looking forward to purchasing some American muscle. In his defense Lutz says the main issue was the low projected sales figures from right-hand drive countries. “The UK was low, and…frankly I think Australia could have stepped up to the plate with some more. But when we finally looked at it there weren’t enough units to justify after all what is a fairly large investment.”
With General Motors emerging from Bankruptcy and being owned partially by the government you are going to see little programs like this go away as it's not cost effective nor will it be profitable for them to continue it.
This news does not completely shut out the possibility of Camaros making it to the UK or Japan as they allow left-hand drive vehicles on public roads. Those folks who live in Australia where left-hand drive is prohibited will have to import and have a Camaro converted to right-hand drive with prices reaching upwards of six-figures.
