The current generation Opel Astra made its debut in Europe back in May of 2009 and ever since its release there have been hopes that the car could eventually make its way to the U.S. as a Saturn or even a Buick. While the Saturn route is no longer possible, the new Astra will be arriving on local shores, although not in its current guise.

You see, the platform underpinning the car--GM's Delta architecture--is shared with the 2011 Chevrolet Cruze and will also underpin a new compact sedan from Buick.

Considering that a new wagon bodystyle has been engineered for the Delta platform, as seen here in these latest spy shots of the upcoming Opel Astra SportsTourer, there’s a strong possibility that similar wagon variants of the local Cruze and Buick compact may also be developed.

As for the Opel Astra SportsTourer, the new wagon is set to go on sale in Europe towards the end of the year and will come with the same range of four-cylinder engines offered on the regular hatch. The Astra’s engine lineup in Europe is vast, consisting of four gasoline units and four turbodiesels that range in output from 94 to 178 horsepower.

Expect a world debut at the 2010 Paris Motor Show in October.

  1. This could be a game changer for GM. The engine choices and style can give them a strong entry against the likes of VW, and the offerings from Korea and Japan. VW is really flourishing however! GM is now in the game!

  2. I still remain skeptical of GM. The taxpayer is getting shafted by GM. Any day now I wait for GM to do a 180 on Pontiac.
Opel is GM's only golden goose. Saturn badged Opels were a great example of GM taking a great product and blowing it.

  3. well btlh2oguy its a good thing the guys that made all those bad decisions are gone. Get with the program and look closer. And they are ahead of schedule on paying back the loan too dude. You obviously don't know how to fix a broken billion dollar company that doesn't have the resources to produce a product that is not profitable (or selling to compete in a very competitive and over crowded market) while maintaining a pace to recover from a global financial crisis caused by not imposing regulations on the banking industry, the mortgage sector and trade tarrifs..........now do you.

  4. GM had so many great products in the pipeline and now with a real management in place look out. Their lab is 2nd to none and now it's focused on automotive only I would presume an not everything but automotive as in t he past. This company is poised to excel as never before save the 60's!

  6. Like the Cruze, this will have Less Power than Next gen Hyundai Accent in its base trim, and has less power than Next Elantra with the Turbo. This thing is nice, even though the interior is a blatant Hyundai New Interior design ripoff: i.e Gen Coupe.
Hyundai and VW are gaining those younger buyers Buick has been looking for as VWs interiors are nice, and Hyundai has Acura's number on the interior front now. However, Buick is spicing up Tier 3 with its latest offerings, which the Interiors are Copies: From Hyundai.

  7. Sharing the same Opel design DNA and Sports Tourer name as its larger counterpart the Insignia, the Astra Sports Tourer has a dynamic yet practical appeal: Its good looks are combined with an ample flexible cargo carrying capability. Efficient trunk design and premium features that enhance the functionality effortlessly raise load space up to 1,550 liters.
