Eddie Alterman's latest column for Car and Driver is something that should be read by any car enthusiast. He doesn't go down the typical path of "Lexus makes boring cars," but he raises the questions why does Lexus the LFA and the IS-F.
While Lexus may be the number one luxury brand in the U.S., BMW is getting close to earning that position despite the company having greater odds against them. The answer Alterman comes up with is that Lexus does not have any original cars in their line up, but most all are some sort of knock-off vehicle.
He doesn't necessarily hate the LFA, and even though there are equally fast cars for sale for less money. But he feels that the only reason the car is being built is because the Ferrari 599 is on the market.
The same he feels is that the IS-F (which he dislikes) only exists because Lexus saw the BMW M-cars, Mercedes Benz's AMGs, and Audi's S-series and wanted one of their own too.
Alterman feels that the car company, especially with the whole recall debacle, needs to focus on what they did best. Their shining moment was when the came up with the RX series and created the whole "crossover" segment.
