Motor Trend has done a comparison of two cars that interest the sports car community: The 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder, and the Tesla Roadster Sport.
The 2011 Porsche Boxster Spyder is a driver's dream. It has a 320hp 3.4L flat-six from the Cayman S and a six speed manual transmission. This is a no-frills car; no radio, air conditioning and a bikini top that takes a while to put on that reduces the weight by nearly 200 pounds.
The 2010 Tesla Roadster Sport comes with a 288hp electric motor that delivers full torque at 0 rpm and provides a 0-60 time of 3.7 seconds. The roadster is based off of the superb Lotus Elise, so it immediately has the handling credentials. Finally the car emits zero emissions, so it comes with the green sensibility.
Motor Trend took both cars to the Southern California test track of choice: The Streets of Willow Springs. The results were unsurprising, but the point that the Tesla was even being compared to the Boxster meant something rings true.
