Ford to Cut 900 Jobs at Flat Rock Assembly Plant

Not sure this is anything to raise an eyebrow about but Ford Motor Company has let it be known they will be eliminating 900 jobs from the Flat Rock Assembly Plant in Michigan starting in July with most of the workers being transferred to other Ford plants.  The workers were notified Monday that the plant will be moving to just a single shift starting July 12th.  The Flat Rock plant which is jointly owned with Mazda Motor produces the Ford Mustang and Mazda6.  With the move to a single shift Ford still plans to increase production as their forecast for the coming year calls for more vehicles to be produced.  To increase production from just a single shift Ford will increase line speed about 35 percent thus making the operation more efficient with little to no downtime.  When Mustang and Mazda6 sales fell sharply in 2009 the plant had a lot of downtime so Ford is hoping to curb this by moving to a single shift and increase line speed to provide stability for the remaining workers.

Keeping the workers busy and reducing staff sounds like some good business on the part of Ford Motor.

  1. Please...keep your comments about "You should be glad to have a job" to yourself. I'm working on my 22 year at the Ford Flatrock plabt. We saw this same worker reduction 10 years ago...and now...we're seeing it again. My seniority has decreased due to numerous worker transfers from other plants. Many of us have work related injuries/wear from these past years here...and this decrease will only mean harder & fewerjobs from which to bid...most requiring work I'm unable to do due to my injueies.Work related injuries...Ford could give a *hit...they treat us like hell giving us the least possible care and attention.I've been taking pain meds for almost 10 years now...pretty much a junkie whore for Ford.Ford screwed us when we changed from MAZDA to FORD about 11 years ago...our Mazda yeads do not work the same as FORD years....Mazda pays pension according to your AGE...full pension not available till you turn 65(ot 62)...meaning many will have to work 40 years + to achieve this! I would have been happy to have taken an early retirement with these last offers....but at $500 less than a FORD worker with the same time invested? Yea right...THANKS FORD for screwing over us Flatrock employees....It would'nt have taken that much cash to make this fair for us.....you fricken cheapskates.

  2. I am with ya fordicated. So many people don't know what it's like to try to find a job that has a good work enviroment, good benefits, and hopefully a retirement package. I believe allot of the people that say "you should be glad to have a job", probably work for a non union company and work for just a little over minimum wage. Nothing wrong with that if you are young and are just enjoying life. But an actual career is coming to an end. All of the people that blame unions will one day realize (when they are old), companies are only interested in making money at any cost, even your body. They do not care about us in any sense of the word. These employers like ford, want more out of people for less and are forcing that will very tactfully through the press. These younger generation will find out one day that killing the unions and doing x union jobs for minimum wage and longer hours, is crap.
