The hachiroku faithful rejoice! Our Colleague, Nelson Ireson over at Motor Autority, has been doing research and reports that the upcoming FT-86 will be coming to the United States.
The Subaru-boxer powered coupe has been rumored since the project's introduction as not coming here to the United States Market. Others have suggested not as a Toyota, butbadged as a Subaru.
That isn't the case anymore, as Nelson wrote, "In the midst of the imbroglio that is Toyota's current multi-recall snafu, there's a ray of good news shining through: during yesterday's Digg Dialogg, Toyota U.S. president Jim Lentz confirmed the FT-86 for U.S. sale."
Since the death of both the MR2 and Celica, Toyota has lacked any sports cars that's available to the average consumer. The FT-86's rear-wheel-drive, light-weight platform is ment to fill that gaping hole in their line up. With prices rumored to start at around $22,000, the FT-86 is going to be gunning for the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.
Other news involving the FT-86 is a rumor that the concept and the G-sport concept designs are not going to be the basis of the production car's design.
The people over at the FT-86 club have said that the design from the Toyota’s Europe Design Development have been rejected in favor of Calty Design Research's design. Calty Design Research is Toyota's North American design studio.
They write, "It’s being reported that the basic elements of the FT-86 in its new form are all ready, with the exception of a few minor items which will be finalized in March. The new Calty designed FT-86 will have less aggressively carved and curved surfaces, will feature increased overhangs (boo!), and have a higher front fascia (in all likelihood to meet current pedestrian safety requirements. Wheelbase and physical dimensions have not changed. As for the Subaru version of the FT-86, it will not differ from the Toyota version as much as previously reported. Expect only badge and option differences."
