We had such high hopes for the Dodge Challenger in 2010 and they came crashing down in the first month of the new year with sub-par sales numbers.  Some of you might know January is one of the worst months for auto sales across the country because of it's proximity to Christmas and also the cold weather.  The weather may have played a bigger role than you think because for much of January the U.S. was hit by several winter storms with very unpleasant temperatures thus keeping folks where it's warm.  Not only were Challenger sales down but so were Camaro and Mustang sales so there may be some truth to my weather theory.  For a complete rundown on the numbers look below.

Sales of the Dodge Challenger for January of 2010 were 1,683 compared to 2,757 from January of 2009 showing a 39% decrease in sales from the previous year. Year to date Challenger sales are 1,683 compared to 2,757 for 2009, which is a 39% decrease.

Month to Month sales were disappointing as December 2009 Challenger sales were 2,536 compared to January 2010 sales of 1,683 which is a 34% decrease from the previous month.

Checking out the competition, Camaro sales were 5,371 while the Ford Mustang sold 4,747 in January.

For previous months of Challenger sales check out December 2009, November 2009, October 2009, September 2009, August 2009, July 2009, June 2009, May 2009, April 2009 and February 2008 -  February 2009.

  1. I hate to beat a dead horse but I hate to see this car fail and I do not think Fiat will get the issue either.
I think there are two reasons the future is not great for this car.
    1. It is too expensive next to the Mustang and the Camaro for what you get. Go ahead and slam those cars all you want but the 5.0 is a major coupe and the Camaro is a killer.
    2. The dealerships. Dodge dealers are some of the worst. It is my opinion, I understand that but after buying three mini vans (my wifes choice, and all three have had big problems with them) and being turned away by FOUR dealers who tried to rip me off on a Challenger in the DFW I think I have a good point. The lots are full of the things now and in fact the B5 blue RT I wanted ended up becoming a demo for the sales manager. You would think he would have wanted to sell a car instead of trying to fleece with not discounts and bad interest rates (and yes, I have perfect credit).
It is too bad overall because the Challenger is a cool car.

  3. Disgruntled might be a bit harsh, but yes I have a huge axe to grind with Dodge dealers.
I am a Chrysler fan and I like the Challenger. I don't want to see the company or the car fail.
Disgruntled? I would say more concerned and passionate.
The price was not really going hold me back on buying one, my biggest gripe with the car is the interior that has been around since the first 300's...you want to talk long in the tooth that would be long in the tooth.
The Challenger is the retro style king. Too expensive IMHO and poor dealers.
The Camaro is the performance king. I can't get past the looks or the interior.
The Mustang is a great car with a superior interior. The new 5.0 will be killer.
As for you J.D. Powers thing give me a break, those guys are idiots. They also ranked the Dodge mini van really high the year the roofs leaked on them (my wife had one). Powers is like believing in Consumer Reports.
But we do agree, the Challenger is a cool car.
I love the gutsy choice in colors...who would ever of thought Panther Pink would return...btw, the new name for the color stinks.

  4. I hope Fiat keeps making the Dodge Challenger. My 2009 Challenger R/T is a real nice car. I have a 2010 SS Camaro and a 2008 Mustang GT. The Camaro and Mustang are far better cars, but the Challenger is a looker and could get more sales if they had a good advertising method. The Dodge dealers do a horrible job of selling the Challenger as well. I find the dealers that have them mark them up way over msrp. I thought my Mopar buddies would buy the new Challenger, but they always have some reason they don't. Buy Mopar.

  5. It would be nice if all of us had the cash to buy one each of all three cars so we could form our own opinions on them. Most of us however have been hit hard by the worse economic times in our history. Alot of us are working two or more jobs to get back on track? I for one am a Chrysler faithful, I love them. I just hope they are on their feet when I get back on mine, I will buy one, don't know if it will be a Challenger or not? But I will buy a Chrysler product of some sort..
As far as the dealers go? I am sick of hearing people complain about how awful Dodge dealers are and how much they mark up the prices. I don't believe they are any worse than the ford and chevy dealers, they all have mark ups and second stickers. If you go in educated knowing what the msrp is, and offer them msrp, and they complain about it, walk away and go to a dealer that will work with you, simple as that....
