Acura recently reported that in the month of November it saw a whopping 79.3 percent increase in sales. How is that possible? Did whole families of snowmen (and women) descend upon hapless Acura dealers demanding the seven seat comfort of the MDX only to find their efforts at world domination thwarted by some fiercely hot seat heaters? Sorry about that. Maybe I am getting a little too excited about the upcoming Christmas holiday TV specials.
The 2010 model year MDX got a slight refreshing this year (although some of those sales may have been leftover 09 models) with the new family nose making its first appearance on the most family friendly Acura SUV. In order to give the MDX some visual parity with the new ZDX SUV fastback Acura decided to give the somewhat plain front of the old MDX a bolder look and to my eyes it works well.
Powered by a 300 horsepower 3.7 liter V6 and a new six-speed automatic this spacious seven seater manages decent fuel economy ratings of 15 city/20 highway. Add in Honda's torque leveling SH-AWD (super handling all-wheel drive) which can send power to any wheel and you have one shockingly fun to drive big SUV.
So why are so many people buying the MDX now? Its the economy, stupid. People now understand that what they really want is something a little less expensive with better fuel economy even if their family needs seven seats for when grandma, grandpa and the three kids are all together. Finally, a big SUV that makes total sense.
