Does Porsche Really Need the Panamera?

2010 Porsche Panamera

Let me get one thing out of the way first. The design; specifically the rear end has gotten some heat for its appearance. I must agree that it is very very awkward!

The Porsche Panamera reminds me a lot of the Porsche 928 (1977 -1995).  Yeah, it was "Ok".  It had horsepower.  It had a fan base; but did it really do anything for Porsche?  Not really.

Don't get me wrong; the Porsche Panamera is a pretty cool luxury sedan.  (After having the car for 3 weeks) It has a ton of power!  The interior is pretty swanky and the overall performance is pretty impressive.  But who are they selling this to?

I had a chance to meet and speak with some buyers at the Beverly Hills Porsche Panamera Launch Event  and the response is very interesting.  Many expect to change the car within 2 years or so. This starts to make a little sense if you compare Panamera buyers to Cayenne buyers; they are surprisingly similar.  And, its very unlikely that those buyers will turn around and buy a 911.  (My reasoning is that, if they really wanted a 911 - they would've bought one already)

I predict that the Panamera will continue to get mixed reviews year after year.  Much like the Cayenne does; Much like the Porsche 928 did.  I predict that in 2 years or so, you will begin to see really reasonably priced Panamera in the used car market.  The prices of the used cars like the Cayenne and 928 will continue to fall dramatically, and the Panamera will do the same.

So, does Porsche really need the Panamera?  Probably, not.  It will last not longer than Porsche 914 Did.  Frankly, IMHO - The Panamera is a drain in Porsche resources.

  1. The Porsche 928 was a great car! It lasted for 18 years! The Porsche Cayenne is one of the best selling cars Porsche ever had. The Panamera is here to stay! It will generate a lot of revenue for Porsche.
