The Bugatti 16C Galibier

2009 Bugatti Galibier 16C Concept

The recently previewed Bugatti 16C Galibier is being compared to its sibling, the Veyron. But not much has been mentioned regarding the antecedents for a Bugatti four door sedan. Yes, there were four door Bugattis, like several Type 41 Royales, most of these were factory built chassis and a coachbuilt body shaped to the clients specifications

Bugatti, however, did have a Type 57 four door sedan in its standard catalogue it was also called the Galibier. There were four body options in the catalouge, three were named after Alpine peaks, the Galibier, Stelvio, and Ventoux. The Type 57 was built from 1934 until the start of WW II and then even a few after the war.

The Type 57 Galibier offered the discriminating motorist a refined, fast, touring car that few could match. The new Galibier, however, dwarfs any comparison to its Type 57 namesake. It is, in that sense, cut from the same cloth as the over-the-top Type 41 Royales. After all, how many enthusiasts own a car that costs as much as the watch Bugatti places in the center console of the new Galibier (a cool $150,000 price tag).
