Will We See an FT-86 Spider From Toyota or Subaru?

For almost a year, auto enthusiasts everywhere were buzzing over a new joint project car, built by Toyota and Subaru. Then, we were finally given the FT-86 concept at the Tokyo Motor Show and spy shots of the Subaru version surfaced, while it performed hot laps at the Nurburgring in Germany.

Now, the folks at Toyota are speculating that they may build a drop-top version of this low-priced, rear-wheel drive sports coupe.

As you will recall, the Toyota FT-86 is the successor to Toyota's AE86 Corolla, which was a lightweight and cheap sports coupe with a four-cylinder engine that put all of its power to the rear wheels.

The new model, which made its debut last month in Tokyo, will use a 2.0-liter boxer four cylinder (thanks to Subaru) with around 220 horsepower and a six-speed manual transmission. The convertible version will most likely feature the same engine and drivetrain.

However, some automotive publications are saying that the FT-86 Spider will in fact, be built under the Subaru name---with a turbocharged boxer engine and an all-wheel drive layout. This could potential fall into an STI-trimmed convertible category and make upwards of 300 horsepower.

At this point, all the information is just speculation, but do not be surprised if Subaru and Toyota put this FT-86 Spider into production to blow away other drop-top cars in the same class. We expect a car of this nature to be priced in the $28,000 price range.

As always, we at High Gear Media will keep you posted on whether this convertible sports coupe gets the nod into production and what it will be bringing when if it gets there. Stay tuned.
