5.0-Liter Twin-Turbo Engine Code Named 'Road Runner' Rumored

More engine rumors have surfaced.   The latest and greatest engine rumor is courtesy of PickupTrucks.com who also brought us the spy photos of the 5.0-liter V-8 'Coyote' engine.  Now they are claiming from their sources a 5.0-liter Twin-Turbo engine code named 'Road Runner' is in the works for the 2012 Shelby GT500.  As much as I would love to believe them I just can't.  I just don't think Ford would create such an engine when the supercharged 5.4-liter has been so stable and trustworthy over the past three years.

What we do know is there is an engine in the works code named 'Road Runner' but the specifics are unknown.  If we are to believe the old cartoon with the Road Runner and the Coyote then we would have to assume the Road Runner engine would be just a bit more powerful than the 5.0-liter 'Coyote' engine to outrun it and never be caught.  My assumptions might be right for once as Brad Barnett over at TheMustangSource has posted in his forum saying the 'Road Runner' engine will be a naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V-8 with a slight bump in horsepower and higher RPM's than the stock motor.  What Mustang would this engine go into you might ask, well Brad seems to think it will be a 2012 Boss Mustang.  He could be right given the rumor a Boss Mustang is in the works.

All these rumors are fun to throw around but until we have some good solid facts to go on we will just have to play the waiting game.

  1. I read the PickupTrucks.com post on the Coyote, as well as the 6.2L Raptor engine. But it's supposed to be naturally aspirated w/o the DI.
WHY can't Ford put the DI into a V8? Is it related to cost?
They also said the Coyote's power output will be "comparable" to the Eccoboost V6. It's a 5.0 V8, it's the newest, and they can't make it significantly more powerful than their own V6?
I saw the photo of the Duratec V6 that is supposed to go into the Mustang. I thought the Eccoboost would be the main V6 for every Ford vehicle.
    Thanks for posting.

    Bad stuff?

  2. So sad the turbo Ecoboost V6 is not going in the 2011 Mustangs. Reason? - it's too good. Almost as strong as the current V8.
The 5.4L Supercharged is at least 25 year old tech. Iron block and full of compromises. It's time for Ford to step up and show what it has learned from all the intervening years of Racing.
I second the only Automobile related comment my Mother ever made, "I do like a turbo!" I'm salavating at the ideal of a V8 twin turbo. It maybe the last mass produced V8 Ford ever produces.

  3. If the Ecoboost V6 is "too good", then it makes the current V8 look bad, right? And if you have a Mustang with a 360+ hp V6, then customers may not want a more powerful V8. The product line of V8-powered 'Stangs becomes threatened.
So there's 2 things Ford can do:
they can pursue and offer the new V8's with 400+ horsepower and hopefully better efficiency and reliability, or they can produce fewer of the current V8's and slowly phase them out, as they make the Eco V6 the only "high-output" engine for the Mustang.
And the baseline Mustang would get the Duratech V6.
Of course, we know what the customers want.
But this would be a management decision, and we all know what MANAGEMENT is capable of.

  4. or, they could take the coyote v8, and instead of 400 horsepower, make it 455, so its still beneath the gt500, but about 100 HP above the ecoboost motor.

  5. This will be a good one to get if its not merely a rumor. I think that this can be a good one for getting much more out of the engine. I am looking forward for it.
