Following in the footsteps of their Sedan sibling, the svelte 3-Series Coupe and Convertible are also due for a mid-cycle facelift towards. Today we have images of a prototype for the updated Coupe rolling around the streets of Munich ahead of its expected unveiling at this month’s Frankfurt auto show.

Like the facelifted Sedan, which was launched late last year, changes to the Coupe should incorporate some sportier styling, reworked head and tail-lamps, and possibly a wider track.

The interior will get a new look as well, with improved trim, a new center armrest and a second-generation iDrive system with four selector buttons for commonly used features such as the stereo. The iDrive system will also sport a new 8.8 inch LCD display and an optional 80 Gb hard drive music and navigation system.

Mechanical updates introduced in the facelifted Sedan, which should also make their way into the new Coupe include a brake energy regeneration system, an auto stop-start function, electro-mechanical power steering and tires with reduced rolling resistance.

  1. The coupe's taillamps still have all the style of a Hyundai...

    Bad stuff?

  2. I rather like it. The lines are very clean. Very few of the Chris Bangle design elements are left, which on one hand makes it a little generic, but on the other it's not offensive (as i found more than one of his designs to be). Something about it reminds me of the old 635 Csi for some reason, but I can't pick out exactly why.

  3. @bepsf

Dude, if you think the tail lights on the 2 series coupe look like Hyundai's I STRONGLY suggest you don't look at the 1 series.

THAT my friend was definitely designed in Korea, the North part, very likely by Kim Jong Il in an attempt to destroy the capitalist system in the West.

  4. Korean conspiracy theories notwithstanding, the last generation was pretty handsome. I think the 635 reminiscent features come from the slope of the rear section of the car (the hood). This is a marked step back from the high decklid designs of the late 90s "wedge" school of car design... It'll make the trunk smaller, even without a spare tire (BMW is a big believer in the run-flat tire).

Roy, You're right, it's the rear quarter of the car that reminds me of the 6 series. Good Call...

You do realize that none of the sheetmetal was changed - They're only revising the bumper & nose caps and the lighting? There really wasn't much of the Bangle touch in the first place - Since the 3-Series is BMW's biggest seller, it was purposely designed to be as conservative as possible so as not to offend the sensitivites of prospective owners.

As to why the current E92 328i Coupe reminds you of an E24 6-Series - Could it be that the two BMW coupes are almost exactly the same size and weight, have inline-6 engines of roughly the same displacement and output and have many of the same classic BMW styling attributes such as the twin-kidney grille w/ hood flares extending aft to the windscreen, quad headlamps w/ foglamps below the bumper, thin-pillared roofline w/ Hoffmeister kink, prominent character line extending fore and aft from the base of the windows...

..to me, this pair of BMW coupes have far more in common than the E24 6-Series and the current 6-Series.

  7. bepsf- It's the E24 that I was thinking of, not the current iteration. For whatever reason, the slight changes just look a little smoother than even the previous one IMO.

  8. This is interesting news but i heard that Some months ago after BMW launched the facelift 3-series the German manufacture is now readying the make over for the coupe flavor.
