The venerable Jaguar XJ isn't really as old as it looks. The retro styling masks an all-aluminum chassis that's surprisingly well-tuned and capable. Inside, things aren't quite up to S-Class standards, but the retro theme is carried off well with high-quality materials. Nevertheless, the XJ is due for replacement later this year, and in anticipation, Arden has offered up a new tuning package called the AJ14.

Aiming to add some modernity to the older XJ, the team at Arden have added a reworked front fascia that includes LED running lights, a pair of spoiler lips below the fog lights, Arden's special version of the Leaper and a redesigned stainless steel grille. Arden also boosts power for all models, from the diesel on up to the supercharged 4.2L V8, which can generate up to 480hp (358kW) once the tuning is done.

The rear of the car gets some updates as well, primarily a new underbody diffuser that is actually functional - it improves airflow, reducing lift at high speeds, improving handling and grip.

Finally, the other new touches to Arden's customized XJ include a set of Zelem One alloy wheels and a special replacement muffler designed to fit inside the new rear diffuser housing.

The new XJ will be arriving in the first half of 2010, but until then Jaguar has released its own set of updates to the big sedan. While you wait to see how the new car measures up, you can brush up on what the outgoing car did well and what it did poorly by reading our review of the XJ Super V8 here.

  1. I've actually always liked the "old styled" XJ. Unfotunately, all things must come to an end; truly the end of an era.

    Bad stuff?

  2. For all of the kudos I read because Jaguar had come up with a new grille, it is amazing how the first "custom" of the XF has a front end that heads pretty much towards Jaguar tradition. And why not given the feline femininity of to original it is a shame to let it go.
