The original Hummer Humvee-based H1, when introduced to public life, was an outrage on society. Obscenely large, grotesquely built and just rude, it was a vehicular display of vulgarity. It was awesome. Now RENNTECH, in conjuction with Platune Design, is following in the Humvee's footsteps with its Concept G-Wagen, designed to shock the sensibilities of today's urban motorist.

In many respects it's just a tuner exercise in excess: big wheels, shiny lips, rims, edges and garnishes. But in many other ways it's just as boxy, bull-headed and brutish as the Humvee seemed a couple decades ago. It's an appropriate use of the G-Class, especially as the line celebrates its 30th anniversary.

Case in point: the ridiculously un-aerodynamic profile and agglomerations. Sticking brick-shaped objects onto a brick only makes it less aerodynamic. The gigantic wheels protruding from the already-wide G-Class body are sure to devour every inch of lane and half of the next, but who expects consideration from a vehicle that looks like this? Just get out of the way.

But on the other hand, despite the G-Class's legitimate off-road cred, it's not the dirt-only savant that the H1 was, and it's not a gas-guzzler. Oh, it's sure to be thirsty, but this beast drinks diesel. An odd choice for U.S.-based RENNTECH since Mercedes doesn't offer the diesel model here yet.

Whatever the end result, however, RENNTECH can be relied upon to boost output to suitably improbable levels.
