As reported earlier by us,
Toyota plans to drop the famous
Corolla nameplate for its new
hatchback because the Japanese automaker believes the name conjures up images of the type of car your Grandma would drive. In Japan’s domestic market, however, the new car will still be called the Corolla, but only the sedan version.
These are scanned images from the Japanese magazine New Car X, which depicts the next generation Corolla as a car that is more evolutionary than revolutionary. To go with the sedan and hatch body styles will be a third, wagon version and possibly even a performance Sportivo model. The car will be built off a new platform but will share the same 1.8-litre engine from the outgoing model. There is talk also of a new
hybrid version to compete with the Honda Civic hybrid and perhaps even a
diesel model for Europe. The new Corolla will make an official appearance by the end of this year and go on sale soon after as a 2007 model.
