Audi is currently developing a mid-sized SUV similar in size to BMW’s X3. To be labelled the Q5, this new soft-roader will go on sale sometime in 2008 and will go head-to-head with the before mentioned X3 and another SUV from
Mercedes. The Q5 will be produced at Audi’s plant in Ingolstadt with a development price tag close to $400 million.
SUV’s have proven invaluable to the
luxury German marques because of the substantial premium in price these vehicles charge over their sedan counterparts. For this reason Audi is even planning another SUV which will most likely get the Q3 title. This small cruiser will be based on a platform that is shared with the
Volkswagen Golf and will be basically a re-skinned version of a small SUV from VW.
Engines will include the popular FSI range and possibly a turbo-charged version as well as
diesel options. There are even plans for a sports version which may get the famous S badging and the
195 kW 2-litre TFSI from the new S3.
