The 2015 Goodwood Festival of Speed gets underway June 25 and one of the stars this year will be Peugeot, which plans to unveil a new performance-oriented 308 hatch that’s widely tipped to be the long-awaited 308 GTI. The new 308 variant will take part in the U.K. event’s famous hill climb and later be on static display at the Peugeot stand where the French automaker will also show off its 500-horsepower 308 R Hybrid concept.

No additional details about the new 308 variant have been released but the 308 R Hybrid concept likely hints at the styling we can expect. Don’t expect a hybrid powertrain in the new 308 variant, however. Instead, we’re likely to see the same 1.6-liter turbo four fitted to Peugeot’s RCZ R coupe.

The engine is already found in the 308 GT, where it rates in at 205 hp. In the new 308 variant we could see output dialed up to the 270 hp, just like in the RCZ R. Potential rivals for the new 308 variant like the Ford Focus ST and Volkswagen GTI produce 252 hp and 210 hp (220 hp with optional performance pack), respectively.

Additional performance upgrades should include suspension tweaks, uprated brakes and a limited-slip differential. Peugeot is yet to offer all-wheel drive on any of its performance models, so it’s likely this 308 variant will stick with the standard 308’s front-wheel-drive system. A six-speed manual should also be standard.
