Though an updated version of the current BMW 5-series is due next year, an all new model is expected to arrive by 2009. The first test-mules have started to appear, this time caught by spy photographers while on the streets of Munich. The prototype that was caught features a new front and much wider fenders to accommodate the new dimensions that are expected for the next 5-series, which is expected to grow in length, width and wheelbase.

Overall the car will have a much cleaner look by dropping the controversial flame surfacing. BMW’s adoption of turbo-charging in its vehicles will see a new twin-turbo V8 model as well as several turbo-diesel units. Performance will also be improved thanks to the extensive use of lightweight materials including carbon-fiber and aluminium. A hybrid version is also expected to be added to the line-up, while the M5 will receive a larger displacement V10. Follow the jump to see more images in full as well as an artist’s rendering.
