Volkswagen will be updating the Phaeton luxury sedan to help boost sales of the in the light of new models and expected updates from its main rivals, BMW and Mercedes Benz, ahead of an all new model due in 2009. The changes to the current car will be mainly cosmetic, with a redesigned front grille and new bumpers, plus a more pedestrian friendly reshaped bonnet.

The car has been restyled to tie in with the rest of the VW family and picks up subtle elements from the smaller Passat and Polo as seen most evidently in the reshaped headlights. Inside the car receives a DVD navigation system in place of the older CD unit from the current car. The next generation Phaeton will feature more coupe-like styling and will be positioned lower than its rivals. Follow the jump to see the full spy images of the Phaeton.
