Sales of high-performance hatches are booming across Europe, so it’s little surprise to see the local carmakers release hotted-up versions of their regular models in an effort to capture some of the expanding market. Renault has now launched a GT version of its Megane coupe and
hatchback, which is basically the standard model with some go-fast exterior parts and a sports-inspired interior.
Buyers can opt for either a 165hp 2.0L gasoline motor or a 150hp 2.0L
diesel unit. Exterior adornments include a new front spoiler, a chrome-finished radiator grill surround on the front bumper, side skirts, hatch airfoil, 17in alloys and a dual chrome-finish central exhaust outlet with tailpipe trim in dark metallic finish. Inside, the car gets sports bucket seats, a leather-covered steering wheel with “GT” badging and aluminum racing pedals.
The faster of the two is the gasoline version, which can reach 100km/h from rest in 8.3 seconds when coupled to the six-speed manual. The diesel boasts best-in-class fuel economy and pollution control, consuming just 5.4 l per 100 km, and emitting just 144 g of CO2 per km. The Megane GT will be produced at Renault’s plant in Palencia, Spain, and will go on sale towards the end of this year.
