Volkswagen is tired of Toyota getting all the glory for its Prius petrol-hybrid vehicles, so will be introducing one of its own in 2009. The first model will be a Jetta and will achieve better economy than the normal TDI versions currently available on the market. The current Jetta gets a fuel economy rating of 35/42mpg, so it wouldn’t be too far-fetched for a hybrid variant to get 50mpg on the highway.

Seeing as the Jetta is basically a Golf with a boot, it’s fairly likely the next-generation Golf will also come with a hybrid option. What we’re really looking forward to is when companies start building diesel-hybrids that could allow a full-sized car to get ratings of up to 80mpg.

    Reading your comment "Seeing as the Jetta is basically a Golf with a boot" I have to ask have you not seen the new 2006 Jetta. It seems your comment is from someone who has been asleep for the past couple of years. Being the owner of a 2006 Jetta sedan TDI, there is no comparison in body style, the interior much more wider than the older style jettas and the new Golfs. Over the years I've owned the a '83 Rabbit, '85 Golf, '91 Multi-van, '92 Golf and now the 06 Jetta TDI. I believe the writer of this article really needs to get out and keep up with design change. I am also open to critism if you can substantiate your comment.

    To Rood Potter: Havent you seen the new 2007 Rabbit? Is the fifth generation of the poular Golf, and of course the Jetta is the saloon version of the Golf , sold here in the USA as the "Rabbit". Compare booth and you will realize that the Jetta is a Golf (rabbit) with a boot.
