Fiat will be entering the hot hatch market with a 200hp version of the Grande Punto. The most powerful model in the current line-up is the 130hp diesel-powered “Sporting,” but this will surpassed by the new model, expected to be endowed with the famous “Abarth” title. Abarth was an Italian carmaker known for its
sports cars, but when it was bought by Fiat in 1971 it became Fiat’s racing division, similar to AMG for
Mercedes or BMW’s M-sport section.
The design of the new car will be tweaked to reflect the increase in power, and will come complete with a roof-mounted air intake as well as a wider track. Bigger alloy wheels and an enhanced aero kit will round out the mods. The new model is expected to make a European debut in late 2007, according to
AutoExpress. Expect it to be priced in the region of £15,000.
