With the 2008 SRT Viper expected to pump out 600 ponies from its 8.4L V10, Z06 owners may have a serious challenge on their hands. With only 505hp to contend with from the hand-built 7.0L LS7, we knew we wouldn’t have to wait long for a tuner to up the output of the Z06.

Vortech Engineering is set to release its latest forced-induction kit for the Z06, with final testing of the V-2 SQ T-trim centrifugal supercharger currently underway. The new system will run ultra-quietly, so there’ll be no rough whine from the blower allowing owners to maintain the stock sound of the potent V8.

The kit, which starts at $6,695, comes with everything you need for installation, including the supercharger, air-to-air aluminum intercooler, compressor bypass valve, aluminum mounting brackets and hardware, high-flow fuel pump, oversize fuel injectors, and a custom Diablo Sports handheld programmer to reflash the factory ECU with optimized settings.

Final output is a very healthy 635hp and a 0 to 60mph time of 3.9 seconds, with the quarter mile passing in 11.5 seconds.

  1. Crazy. How people expect cars like this to last more than a few thousand miles between serious maintenance is beyond me. You just can't get power output like this without problems...

  2. Gus, why can't a car like this develop that much power reliably? I mean, the engine is a 7.0L V8 beast used by numerous niche supercar manufacturers. I know for a fact that Vortech's system only produces 6psi of boost, extremely mild when compared to most small capacity force-fed motors.

The Corvette is also a very good platform.

As long as it's maintened to the manufacturers specifications, i don't see how this car would have any problems.

  3. Good information. Katech (the builder of engines for the C6R) gets 600 HP from a Z06 without resorting to superchargers.

  4. yeah, katech's engines also cost 30 thousand dollars where the superchargers cost about 6k.

  5. When people quote horsepower numbers I always shrug my shoulders because they don't mean much. A lot of tractor trailer rigs are only rated at 300HP, the same as a Mustang GT. If you think that mustang really makes as much power as a big Peterbilt truck your dreaming. Real power is about torque, and supercharger/ turbochargers increase the torque from low RPMs to high RPMs. Do not be fooled by an engine that only makes high horsepower at high RPMs, it is not going to make as much real power if it does not make good power across the RPM range.

Blowers can actually make engines last longer by allowing them to be used at lower RPMs. If the blower is limmited to 6PSI there should not be detonation problems but the extra heat that comes with more power can cause problems.

I think Corvettes are fine transportation for the elderly. If you want to go fast you really need to buy a motorcycle.

  6. Julius, You seem to know more than I do about superchargers. I have a 94 Greenwood Corvette with 410 hp. I'm looking at a Vortech V2 Supercharger. But I don't want to ruin the motor. It comes with an intercooler as well. So what I'm asking is, would I be safe installing the system or be happy with 410 hp?

  7. Ok this is for everyone the Motor Trend said the car can probably hit 10's .. they said 11.5 with masive tirespin even in 2nd gear with stock tires and shifting at 4k rpm.

The Vortec system is so efficient that you cant shift at 7k rpm till you are in 3rd gear. That means that if you put the right size tires or even slicks youll be doing 10's ..6psi is no big deal for this engine. The zr1 sill have 638hp but you will be able to control it .

  8. Also ! if you have an old project car and want 500hp and 30mpg you can try a project Ecotec 2.0 Sc buildup. you can also use the 2.4 block but the 2.0 is stronger .all you have to do is replace Cam , Rods ,valve springs Pistons and head gasket , replace the SC with a Turbo system and BAMB! ultra reliable 500hp engine that runs on E85 but can also run at 91octane with a little less hp.

Gm has put part numbers and tells you exaclty how to do it in their Ecotec performance build books. They got from 300hp 500hp 1000hp and 1400hp partnumbers. Ofcourse if you want to build a 400hp engine you would use 500hp parts for reliablity .wich is basicaly pistons and rods upgrades 500+hp requiers new crank i think. They state that they have ran over 200pases with no block problems . take a look
