Preview: 2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK

Update: Official GLK concepts here and here.

These are the latest renderings of Mercedes’ upcoming midsized SUV, which is scheduled to enter production in the second half of next year. This rendering, compiled with information sourced from insiders close to the project, show that the new GLK picks up the same angular design theme and ruggedness seen in the rest of the Mercedes SUV range. The only major difference from previous impressions is the new tear-drop headlights and shortened taillights.

The GLK will initially be offered with a four-cylinder Kompressor motor and a 3.5L V6. These will be followed by Mercedes' new four-cylinder Bluetec diesel displacing 2.2L and producing up to 204hp.

  1. Model #178 in the MB lineup. As ridiculous and unnecessary as the X3. There's no doubt MB has abandoned it's position as the example other car companies follow to become the Toyota for the rich. They're not exclusive anymore, not by a long shot, and becoming more common place every day. That being the case why would anyone pay a premium based on the image?

  2. Yes, Benz is stepping on itself again - on the face of it. However, it will be curious to see if the GLK replaces the ML.

  3. I will be the first to admit that Mercedes has too many models, but don't you guys agree there is a gap in the lineup for this kind of car? The X3 is selling well as is the Lexus RX. Once Audi joins in with the Q5 the fight is on. Having the M, GL, and R-class is one too many but the R-class could easily be replaced with the GLK.

  4. No, sorry, don't agree there's a gap anywhere. It's the car companies that create the gaps and at MB they are experts at doing this. There was absolutely no need for the R class. Ditto the CLS which is a monstrosity for blinged out pimps and playas.

Nowhere does it say that you have to have a different kind of car at all levels of size. There's no need for small, medium and large convertibles, sedans, sports cars, SUVs, MPVs, etc.

MB should go back to its roots: makers of exceptional, luxurious, safe and tecnologically advanced cars and sell them for a premium. Right now it's more exclusive to own a Lexus or an Infiniti than a MB. When did that happen?

  5. I am on my second Mercedes C class with the current one being a 4matic. In the climate I live in the all-wheel drive is very useful. I can't wait for the GLK to hit. I took a close look at the new ML when it hit the market 2 years ago. Too big, ride too rough and the quality not where I want it since it is made in Alabama and not Germany. The idea of a small SUV built on the c class and made in Germany will be fantastic. Doubt we will get the 4 cylinder kompressor or bluetec but I would like either one rather than the stock V6.
