Volkswagen will be using next month’s Frankfurt Motor Show to debut the first BlueMotion version of its popular Golf hatch, which will star alongside five other BlueMotion cars planned for the show. BlueMotion is VW’s title for its ultra-efficient diesel range, which combines not only a fuel-sipping diesel engine but several other fuel-saving technologies as well.

The new Golf BlueMotion consumes just 4.5L of diesel per 100km, equating to a hybrid rivaling 52mpg fuel consumption figure. At this rate, carbon-dioxide emissions levels stand at just 119g/km and a single tank will take you over 745miles (1,200km). Under the hood is a 105hp (77kW) TDI that works with aerodynamic optimization, software motor management and low resistance wheels and tires to achieve the amazing mileage rates.

The addition of this latest model brings VW’s tally of the super-efficient models up to nine cars, but expect even more in the near future including new hybrid cars. Joining the Golf BlueMotion on VW’s stands will be the new Tiguan SUV and a rear-engined minicar concept.
