McLaren promises to add a new model sporting a unique bodystyle to its entry-level Sports Series range next year—and the car isn't going to be a Spider convertible. Instead, this new Sports Series entry is expected to feature a more practical (think extra storage) bodystyle.

What might such a car be like? According to Australian publication Drive, the car may just be a shooting brake.

A shooting brake is typically a coupe with a tall, wagon-like rear. Ferrari already has a shooting brake in its lineup in the form of the FF, and it's conceivable McLaren might be planning one as well.

“I won't deny or confirm but it could be an interesting way to go because that segment needs space,” McLaren design chief Frank Stephenson told Drive when quizzed about a shooting brake bodystyle for the new Sports Series model.

He went on to explain that the car will be quite different to the existing 570S and 540C, and that the targeted buyer will also be different to someone looking to purchase one of the existing Sports Series models. He explained that this was important to prevent one model cannibalizing sales of another.

Look for the new McLaren Sports Series model to debut at the 2016 Geneva Motor Show next March. The Spider convertible will eventually follow in 2017.
