Honda is set to be one of the first carmakers in the world to launch a production hydrogen fuel-cell vehicle with the announcement today that the FCX concept car (pictured) will arrive in production form next month. Honda also announced a hybrid sports car based on the recently revealed CR-Z Concept will also enter production.

The announcement came from Honda’s President and CEO Takeo Fukui, who said the new fuel-cell vehicle will be unveiled at the L.A. Auto Show next month and will eventually go on sale in the U.S. and Japan sometime next year.

The new sports hybrid will arrive in 2009 and coincide with the launch of Honda’s forthcoming ‘global hybrid’ family car.

Honda was one of the first to the markets with a hybrid model but quickly fell out of the spotlight when Toyota’s Prius arrived. These latest models will help to reaffirm Honda’s green image and help it reach its target of a quarter of a million hybrid sales by 2009.
