Although it's not the first hydrogen-powered toy car, it's claiming to be the first radio-controlled hydrogen fuel cell car, and the maker - Corgi, yes like the dog - is calling Detroit out for getting "beaten to the punch". The duo of high-tech toys will debut at a Nuremburg toy fair next month - and Corgi claims that it will therefore be the first company to bring the
green technology to market.
As if shaming the car industry with superior technology weren't enough, the toy maker has commissioned the design from Luigi Colani, the concept car legend that has designed concepts for Corvette,
BMW, Ferrari and Mercedes, among others. So the two toys are sure to be sexy little green-machines as well.
Unfortunately, the 1/16 scale cars won't make it any easier to get your groceries home, and although the hydrogen fuel cell is itself a green power source, it's questionable how much advantage it holds over the rest of the R/C car market, which is dominated by EVs. Considering that the bulk of hydrogen gas is generated from natural gas, there's a slight chance that your green R/C toy might have higher total emissions than its electric counterparts.
No word yet on how
Honda feels about all of this "beaten to the punch" talk.
