Chevrolet today announced pricing for the 2009 Aveo lineup and introduced the redesigned Aveo5 five-door hatchback in the North American market. Pricing for both the sedan hatch starts at $12,120 (including a $660 destination charge) for the LS level of trim, and despite the low cost the cars still come standard with side-impact air bags and OnStar.

Standard features across the range include dual frontal and side-impact air bags, as well as front safety belt pretensioners, a tire pressure monitoring system, oil life monitoring system and OnStar.

The Aveo sedan and Aveo5 LT models start at $14,255 for 1LT trim and $15,520 for 2LT trim (including destination charges). Air conditioning is standard on LT models and an automatic transmission is available.

All models are powered by a new, more powerful 1.6L Ecotec engine that uses variable valve timing and other upgrades to deliver great fuel economy and responsive performance. Aveo models equipped with the available four-speed automatic transmission deliver impressive highway mileage ratings of 34mpg. City mileage ratings with the automatic are 25 mpg. However, cars equipped with a manual transmission are even more efficient, with estimated fuel economy ratings of 27mpg in the city and 34mpg on the highway.

    Anyone know what the Aveo is based on? Is it a shared design with anyone? Does it have strange Suzukian underpinnings?

    it's an SX4. i dont know who designed the under pinnings, but i would certainly prefer a suxuki sub compact over a chevy.

    I don't know how much this matters to anyone but this car IS used in WRC... mind you... a WRC car and a normal "production" car share hardly anything besides the body panels.. but some people would buy a car because of that....... personally i'd rather buy a focus because its a rally car, than buy a fusion because its a "nascar".... now THAT would be a stupid thing to do.

    Its NOT based on the SX4 chris. Just proved you dont know it all. Its a rebaged daewoo kalos and nothing more. The SX4 is a bigger car and much better looking and built.

    mark is absolutely correct! As well, the North American focus is nothing like the Euro Focus on which the WRC car is based. Of all the cars competing in WRC at this moment, the only ones available to purchase, that are similar to their WRC brethren in North America, are the Impreza and the SX4.

    I bought a 2009 Aveo5 LT, under the "Cash for Clunkers" program. I would buy it again in a heartbeat.
    This chassis is also sold (with a variety of drivetrains) as an Opel, a Lancia, a Vauxhall, a Daewoo, a Kia and a Suzuki (at least). Performance parts are very readily available for the platform under both the Suzuki and Lancia marques. (SEE http://www.daewootech.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=11159).
    After 30,000 HARD miles, I will list ALL the modifications needed to make it an exceptional road car: I replaced the stock Kuomo tires with General Altamax HP's (about $75 each) and raised the tire pressure to 42 psi. That's it.
    This completely eliminating the nasty body roll (and rebound!) that results from sidewall deflection under cornering. .
    So before you dismiss the Aveo5, put some air in the tires and drive one hard, you will come away a believer.
