The next-generation Porsche 911 Carrera coupe has been caught out testing on the track to put this prototype through its paces. While the interior is unknown at this time, the biggest changes are clearly to come to the exterior as seen in the pictures. Looks like this Porsche is not shy.
This 911 is sporting a newly styled roof with a "dip" or "channel" down the middle to let the air flow more efficiently over the roof and down the back end. This "dip" certainly helps with the aerodynamics of the car as the air gets channeled directly over the rear end to the spoiler to keep the car pressed down at speed, and to directly feed cooling air into the engine. If you look closely at the pictures, you can see a small spoiler catch mouth at the end of the rear glass to catch the air to let it into the engine compartment. Another hint at the new performance-oriented design of this car, is that this new roof has no sunroof. A roof without a sunroof helps to lighten the car which then helps to increase the performance aspects of the car as it has to carry less weight. I'm sure Porsche will have a sunroof option for those who want one while they cruise down Main Street.
Another new change to look forward too is the possibility of a new rear spoiler, as evidenced with the camouflage coverings housing the spoiler area. The coverings and tail-light appear to be quite high, so perhaps a more aggresively styled spoiler is in the works.
Expected to be released in 2010, the new 911 will surely carry on the rich history of its model lineage.
