This is not a shelby as all shelby's had a K for the engine code and should have a code of R for San Jose.

Larry Walker is correct. It is NOT a shelby. It's a Metuchen, NJ (second digit T) built fastback with an A-code (fifth digit) 289/225 hp engine. All Shelby's in 1965 started as San Jose (second digit R) built fastbacks with a K-code (fifth digit) 289/271 hp engine.
Shelbyman Dennis Says:
The Shelby VIN Tag is as fake as the car, printing on the tag "Shelby America". original 65 tag said "Shelby American" - no "n". Both the Ford VIN - Code K and R as noted by Larry Walker and Shelby Bob pointed out is correct.

It definitely is NOT a Shelby Mustang. As pointed out, all 562 1965 GT350's came in 'knock down' from San Jose plant (R) and had 289 HiPo motors (K). Even if you are unaware of Shelby history, SCCA rules via 1965 would fill in the blanks...in '65 you had to homologate the car for racing and could only alter the drivetrain or suspension for the R models. This is why ALL the '65 and the first 250 or so '66's had the race suspension. The r suspension = lowered control arms, override traction bars etc...

Matt, do a little research someone reading your article would believe that in 1965 the engine code for a Shelby would be "A". with hundreds of clones out there, someone might be taken deep! you should retract your article.
