Ford Says No Way To 4-Door Mustang

A few days after AutoWeek and Autocar reported a 4-door Mustang was in the works Ford responded saying it's completely not true. It was pretty much as I stated in my previous entry that a Mustang Sedan or Wagon was total BS and I could not see Ford going through with any such model. According to Ford the Mustang is an icon and will continue in it's current form as a unique 2 door, 2+2 performance car. Read the whole press release from Ford below.

Press Release:

Ford Motor Company today made clear that recent media speculation concerning an expanded Mustang line – including a sedan and wagon model to be sold in global markets – is not true. Mustang is an icon and will continue in its current form: a unique, two-door, rear-wheel drive, 2+2 performance car.

At the 2007 North American International Auto Show, Ford will unveil a four-door, rear-wheel-drive concept car. The concept, known as “The Interceptor”, is based on the Mustang’s rear-wheel-drive architecture but it is not a Mustang and no production plans have been announced. Additional information on the Ford rear-drive concept will be available December 31, 2006.

  1. I have a magazine from 1994 when they radically redesigned the Mustang, Ford stated that the Mustang would always be a 2 door, RWD car, with a floor shift. I cannot see, and would not want to see it any other way!! Period. In it's 42 yr history, that's what it's always been.
The 4th thing the article said that was iconic to the Mustang is the pony running in reverse, i.e. running from right to left. Does it drive anyone else nuts seeing the pony going the WRONG WAY!! (Only exception to this is from Ford on the Passenger fender badges)

    Bad stuff?

  2. Well that is a big relief cuz it would look so stupid with 4 doors. I'm so glad that they are not going to be like Dodge and try to change a classic look.

  3. I think ford NEEDS to make a sedan on the S197 platform a reality. I have a 2010 'stang GT. I think if they did it right it would be an incrediably nice car as a four door. Look at the Lambo Estoque 4 door. In the newest Motor Trend they compare the new 2011 5.0 to a BMW M3 it comes as a 2 or 4 door. No one thinks poorly of that. I think ford would have a sales winner. A lot of people who have families forgo mustangs because they are not practical enough. Look at all the euro sports sedans. Step up Ford and make the future brighter instead of looking at the past with rose colored glasses. If you don't like the 4 door mustang don't buy it...I would like one when I start having kids...especially with the new 5.0 :)

  4. I have kids now and they love the 5.0 Mustang. I just can't fit them in it. 4 doors and slightly more leg room is all I need.
