For years, the Land Rover Range Rover was unparalleled in the luxury SUV segment.

But with demand for SUVs soaring over the past decade it was only a matter of time until rivals started to challenge it.

The Range Rover is still hard to beat when it comes to an SUV that offers sublime luxury and serious off-roading potential but Land Rover isn’t resting on its laurels. That’s why the British automaker is introducing an updated version with even more luxury and technology.

The current Range Rover, the nameplate’s fourth iteration, was introduced for the 2013 model year. For 2017, it receives a few subtle styling tweaks as well as improved infotainment features, more advanced driver aids and a new SVAutobiography Dynamic model.

New trim options are offered in the cabin which now sports a larger 10.2-inch touchscreen display for the infotainment system. The latter, dubbed InControl Touch Pro, features improved connectivity and navigation as well as new apps. For example, the navigation now offers door-to-door routing when connected with a smartphone, as well as the ability to display full or partial maps in the digital instrument cluster. Also new to the infotainment system is an app that enables the owner to remotely control some vehicle functions such as the alarm, engine start and climate settings.

In the area of driver aids, Land Rover has added a trailer assist feature that provides guidelines in the display to aid the driver when backing up. There are also monitoring features for speed limits, blind spots, lane departure, and driver drowsiness. An automatic braking function is also included and can bring a vehicle to a standstill in an emergency. Finally, the adaptive cruise control gets a feature that can adjust the speed in both directions when cruising along a highway, even bringing the vehicle to a stop when necessary.

To improve the vehicle’s off-road potential, Land Rover has added a low traction launch mode, ideal for slippery surfaces such as mud or snow. The system remains active until the speed exceeds roughly 18 mph. There is also an off-road mode for the infotainment system, which includes displays for vehicle geometry, drive assist controls, slope assist and wheel information.

No changes have been made to the powertrain lineup. It includes a 340-horsepower supercharged 3.0-liter V-6, a 254-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 diesel, a 510-hp supercharged 5.0-liter V-8, and a 550-hp supercharged 5.0-liter V-8. The latter is reserved for the SVAutobiography and new SVAutobiography Dynamic model. All models get an 8-speed automatic.

Unique features of the new SVAutobiography Dynamic model include a diamond pattern for the leather-lined seats, 20-way adjustment for the front seats, sophisticated trim including a knurled finish for the pedals, and a special Graphite Atlas finish for elements around the exterior. The vehicle also gets a lower, sport-tuned suspension and Brembo brakes with red calipers. The suspension also includes adaptive dampers and active anti-sway bars to help reduce body lean through corners.

The 2017 Land Rover Range Rover will be on sale in late 2016. Pricing will start at $86,645 for the base model and soar up to $171,990 for the SVAutobiography Dynamic. Both figures include Land Rover’s standard $995 destination charge.

Note, some of these changes appear on the 2017 Range Rover Sport.
