There are now just nine points separating the top two drivers in the 2016 Formula One World Championship after an impressive performance put in yesterday by Mercedes AMG’s Lewis Hamilton at the Canadian Grand Prix.

The reigning world champion fended off Ferrari’s [NYSE:RACE] Sebastian Vettel to secure the win, with Vettel eventually crossing the line 5.0 seconds later.

Williams’ Valtteri Bottas claimed the team’s first podium of the season, finishing third albeit 46 seconds after the leader.

Hamilton started the race on pole but a great start by Vettel at third on the grid meant the German was soon in the lead. Hamilton came into contact with teammate Nico Rosberg at Turn 1 but fortunately there was no serious damage this time.

Later in the race Hamilton would emerge the leader thanks to an early pit stop. From there, he managed to hold off Vettel whose tires were more suited to warmer weather than the cool temperatures we saw yesterday in Montreal.

Sadly for Rosberg, a puncture late in the race saw him lose a podium finish. This allowed Bottas to claim third and Red Bull Racing’s Max Verstappen to claim fourth. Rosberg tried hard to pass Verstappen in the closing stages but made some mistakes including a spin. He eventually crossed the line fifth.

Ferrari’s other man Kimi Räikkönen finished sixth ahead of Red Bull’s other driver Daniel Ricciardo in seventh. Williams’ other driver Felipe Massa was running seventh at one point but was forced to retire due to mechanical issues. McLaren’s Jenson Button and Renault’s Jolyon Palmer also retired due to car trouble.

In eighth was Force India’s Nico Hulkenberg while Toro Rosso’s Carlos Sainz claimed ninth spot. Rounding out the top ten was Force India’s other driver Sergio Perez who managed to hold off McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Toro Rosso’s Daniil Kvyat.

Rosberg still leads the 2016 Drivers’ Championship with 116 points. Hamilton is second with 107 points and Vettel third with 78 points. In the Constructors’ Championship, Mercedes has 223 points versus the 147 of Ferrari and 130 of Red Bull. The next race on the calendar is the European Grand Prix which is being held this weekend in the new location of Baku, Azerbaijan.
