The pace of change in the auto industry has never been quicker, and we’re seeing that in some of the many vehicles destined to appear at the 2016 Paris auto show, which opens its doors to the media on Thursday, September 29.

It’s where automakers like Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen plan to reveal radical vehicle electrification programs, and perhaps self-driving technologies, too. The good news is that there will still be plenty of conventional offerings to appease those with gasoline in their veins. Here’s a quick rundown of what you can expect.

Lexus UX: Lexus will show a concept that’s believed to be a preview of a new subcompact crossover SUV currently in the works. Few details have been released but we know the design was handled by a team in Europe. It was recently previewed in some teaser shots and from what we can gather the planned production version will be twinned with Toyota’s new C-HR.

Citroën Cxperience: French automaker Citroën will unveil a futuristic sedan that may just be a preview of its next-generation C5. That’s because the concept is roughly the same size as the current C5, which has been on sale since 2007 and is long overdue for replacement. Forward-looking elements include a plug-in hybrid powertrain, numerous connectivity features and avant-garde styling.

Hyundai RN30: Hyundai has unveiled a new generation of its i30 compact hatch. The previous-generation i30 is sold here as the Elantra GT and we expect this new one to come too, although Hyundai is yet to confirm it. The good news is that the new i30/Elantra GT will spawn a performance-oriented model developed by the new Hyundai N division. In Paris, we’ll get a preview of the upcoming hot hatch in the form of the RN30 concept car.

Volkswagen electric car: Volkswagen plans to launch a bevy of electric cars in the near future. One of these will be a hatchback about the size of the Golf and we’ll get a preview of it in Paris in the form of a concept car. VW already sells some electric cars, including the e-Golf here in the United States. However, its new electric cars will be next-generation models riding on a dedicated platform called the MEB, previewed in the Budd-e concept at January’s 2016 Consumer Electronics Show.

Mitsubishi GT-PHEV concept, 2016 Paris auto show

Mitsubishi GT-PHEV: Mitsubishi has another plug-in hybrid SUV to show us, though sadly it’s still a concept. It’s called the GT-PHEV and has been designed around the Japanese automaker’s next-generation plug-in hybrid system. The system combines a high-capacity battery, a trio of electric motors and an internal combustion engine designed specifically for hybrid applications. Don’t be surprised if we see this setup in a next-generation Outlander or perhaps even a new Montero.

PERFORMANCE CARS

Ferrari LaFerrari Aperta: The open-top version of Ferrari’s [NYSE:RACE] LaFerrari flagship makes its world debut in Paris but Ferrari has already shown us the car and a couple of examples have already been spotted in the wild. It celebrates Ferrari’s 70th anniversary coming up in 2017 and will be built in a rumored run of just 150 cars. To accommodate the missing roof, some reinforcements were made to the body and new aerodynamic elements added as well. Otherwise, the LaFerrari and LaFerrari Aperta should be much the same.

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT C Roadster

2018 Mercedes-Benz AMG GT C Roadster

2018 Mercedes-AMG GT C Roadster: The Mercedes-AMG skunk works will have its own open-top car in Paris, in this case the new GT Roadster. Two versions will be offered at launch, a base GT and more hardcore GT C. The latter is mechanically aligned with Mercedes-AMG’s GT R although output from its twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V-8 is slightly lower at 550 horsepower versus the 577 of the GT R. With either model you’re looking at 0-60 mph acceleration in under 4.0 seconds and one of the sexiest exteriors currently in production.

2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC43 Coupe

2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC43 Coupe

2017 Mercedes-AMG GLC43 Coupe: If it's four-door performance you desire then perhaps Mercedes-AMG’s new GLC43 Coupe is for you. Like other "43" models, the GLC43 Coupe is one of AMG’s new tame offerings, though tame by AMG standards is still ridiculous. For example, this small SUV packs a twin-turbocharged V-6 putting out 362 hp and 384 lb-ft of torque. Paired with a 9-speed and all-wheel drive, the engine will send this vehicle from 0-60 mph in 4.8 seconds and on to a governed top speed of 155 mph.

2017 Mini John Cooper Works Clubman

2017 Mini John Cooper Works Clubman

2017 Mini John Cooper Works Clubman: It won’t be all top-dollar performance in Paris. Mini will use the show to launch the John Cooper Works version of its latest Clubman. The feisty hot hatch is powered by the same turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 as the JCW Hardtop but there’s more torque available and this time drive is directed to all four wheels instead of just the front pair. Buyers will be able to choose from 6-speed manual or 8-speed automatic transmissions.

Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T

Ferrari GTC4 Lusso T: In addition to its LaFerrari Aperta, Ferrari will show off a new V-8-powered GTC4 Lusso. The GTC4 Lusso is an overhauled FF unveiled by Ferrari earlier in the year. Its new V-8 option offers 601 horsepower and 560 pound-feet of torque while the original V-12 musters up 680 hp and 514 lb-ft. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and all-wheel drive remain standard on both.

LUXURY CARS

2018 Land Rover Discovery: The LR4 is on its way out, soon to be replaced by a new SUV reviving the Discovery nameplate. The Discovery, due in showrooms in mid-2017,  is the second model in Land Rover’s leisure-oriented range, which already includes the Discovery Sport. It will be aimed at soccer moms—it’s Land Rover’s rival to three-row, seven-seat luxury SUVs such as the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90—though it’s strong suit will be Land Rover’s tradition of off-road ruggedness.

2018 Audi A5 Sportback (European spec)

2018 Audi A5 Sportback (European spec)

2018 Audi A5 Sportback: The United States never got the first round of Audi’s  A5 Sportback but that won’t be the case for the new model, which makes its world debut in Paris. The car is essentially a stretched A5 coupe with four doors and a larger liftback. Think of it as a smaller version of the A7. There’s the regular A5 Sportback and more potent S5 Sportback debuting in Paris. We hear that Audi will eventually add a high-performance RS 5 Sportback with close to 500 horses of grunt.

2018 Audi Q5: Audi’s aging Q5 will soon be replaced by a successor. We’ve been spying the new model in prototype form for years and in Paris the covers will finally come off. The new Q5 adopts Audi’s latest MLB platform and for the United States will be sourced from a plant in Mexico. Audi has released a teaser video that reveals some of the design details. There are clear influences from the latest Q7 and the taillights look similar to the units on the latest A4.

2018 Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid

2018 Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid

2018 Porsche Panamera 4 E-Hybrid: Porsche will expand its second-generation Panamera range with a new plug-in hybrid model in Paris. It’s called the Panamera 4 E-Hybrid, and it’s the replacement for the Panamera S E-Hybrid from the previous generation. Once again an internal combustion engine is paired in parallel with an electric drive system, though now all four wheels are doing the driving due to a standard all-wheel-drive system. Peak output is 462 hp and 516 lb-ft, which for those at home counting is actually higher than the previous S-badged model.

2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain (European spec)

2017 Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain (European spec)

Mercedes-Benz E-Class All-Terrain: Mercedes is about to enter the premium soft-roader market with a toughened-up version of its E-Class Wagon. The vehicle is called the E-Class All-Terrain and has already been shown. It will compete directly with Audi’s A6 Allroad sold overseas, as well as the recently revealed Volvo V90 Cross Country. It comes with a raised ride height, underbody protection and all-wheel drive.

That’s it for now but at any time you’ll be able to access the latest information from the 2016 Paris auto show via our dedicated hub.
