When Audi rolled out its new Q7 at the recent 2015 Detroit Auto Show, the German automaker confirmed that one of the variants from the new Q7 family would be a plug-in hybrid diesel. The variant, called the “Q7 e-tron 3.0 TDI quattro”, has now made its world debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show.

The Q7 e-tron 3.0 TDI quattro’s drivetrain consists of a turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6 diesel engine paired with an electric motor integrated with the transmission, in this case an eight-speed automatic. The combined output of the system is 373 horsepower and 516 pound-feet of torque, which Audi says will see the big SUV accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 6.0 seconds and reach a top speed a tick under 140 mph. At the same time, the vehicle will also be capable of returning a fuel economy of 138.4 mpge.

The vehicle’s battery is a lithium-ion unit and when fully charged should see the Q7 e-tron quattro cover some 35 miles on electric power alone. With a full tank of diesel also on board, the driving range increases to 876 miles! Not bad for a luxury SUV with third-row seats and a permanent all-wheel-drive system.

There are multiple driving modes available. An “EV” mode prioritizes electric driving, while in “Hybrid” mode a computer decides on the type of drive for the most part. In “Battery Hold” mode, the system stores the available electrical energy for when the driver wants to switch into EV mode, and “Charge” mode ensures that the battery is always charging from regenerative forces.

Innovations to help boost efficiency include a thermal management system with integrated heat pump, specially developed for the Q7 e-tron 3.0 TDI quattro. This makes it possible for the waste heat from the electrical drive components to be made available in the vehicle’s cabin. Furthermore, there is a coasting mode where the power units can be decoupled from the drivetrain; and the navigation system is also smart enough to choose the most efficient route to take depending on road conditions.

The Audi Q7 e-tron 3.0 TDI quattro goes on sale in Europe in the spring of 2016. We know the vehicle will be coming to the U.S., but whether it will feature a gasoline engine or a diesel for its internal combustion component is yet to be announced.
