Bentley’s new SUV due in showrooms in 2016 will be called the Bentayga, the British automaker confirmed this week at the 2015 Detroit Auto Show. We’ll have to wait until later this year to see the Bentayga but along with the name Bentley revealed a few more details about its first-ever SUV.

The Bentayga name is meant to convey a sense of the natural world. The name comes from the Roque Bentayga, a rocky volcanic structure located on the Canary Islands, but it is also meant to signify the snowy forests of the north known as the Taiga. It also happens to honor Bentley founder W.O. Bentley by including part of his name.

“Bentayga is a name that reflects what we know our SUV will do better than any other car in the world—combine  the best automotive luxury with outstanding performance to take the Bentley experience to new environments,” Bentley CEO Wolfgang Dürheimer said in Detroit.

In the teaser video above, we see a prototype for the Bentayga undergoing hot-weather testing at a location in the Middle East. Bentley is now in the final stages of development of the SUV, which it first previewed back in 2012 with the controversial EXP 9 F concept.

Bentley has confirmed that the Bentayga, while featuring similar proportions to the EXP 9 F, will look dramatically different. For example, designers have adopted four individual lights for the production model’s headlights as opposed to the two lights fitted to the concept.

The vehicle will be a five-seater but we may see a seven-seat option at some point. Underpinning the Bentayga is the same SUV version of the Volkswagen Group’s new MLB Evo platform that debuted in the 2016 Audi Q7, on show this week in Detroit.

V-8 and W-12 engines are expected at next year’s market launch. Bentley has confirmed that a plug-in hybrid option will be made available in 2017.

A debut at the 2015 Geneva Motor Show in March is possible for the Bentley Bentayga.
