The all-new Mazda 2 made its debut in Japan overnight ahead of its market launch in the U.S. next year, as a 2016 model. The popular subcompact, which in its home market is labeled a Demio, is now in its fourth generation, although in the U.S. the new 2 only represents the second generation of the car.

As expected, the 2016 Mazda 2 stays true to the form previewed by the Hazumi concept car unveiled earlier this year. Mazda’s KODO design language is the basis for the car’s stylish lines.

For the interior, Mazda designers have gone for a minimalist look. The dash is largely devoid of physical buttons, with most of the vehicle functions controlled by a rotary dial located below the gear lever. Information is provided via a digital display mounted to the top of the dash. This is the basis of Mazda’s Connect infotainment system.

Mazda says its new 2 has benefitted from the automaker’s full suite of SkyActiv technologies, including a lightweight, stiff body and fuel-efficient engines. For the Japanese market, the car will be available with a SKYACTIV-G 1.3-liter gasoline engine and a SKYACTIV-D 1.5-liter diesel.  We’re likely to only see the gas unit here in the U.S., unfortunately. Full specifications will be announced closer to next year’s market launch.
