All proceeds from the sale will go to support the Karmanos Cancer Institute, which General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] is a longstanding partner of. Note, the car on display at the auction isn’t actually the first 2015 Corvette Z06. It’s a pre-production model used mainly for public appearances. Production starts later this year, with the first examples due in showrooms in early 2015.
Another highlight of the past weekend’s Collector Car Auction was a 1964 Ford GT40 prototype sold during a Mecum event. The car, shown in the video below, bears chassis number 104, making it just the fourth GT40 to be built. This particular car didn't succeed in its 1964 debut, but drivers such as Phil Hill, Bruce McLaren, Bob Bondurant, Ken Miles, Jo Schlesser, Richie Ginther, Richard Attwood all took the wheel during its two-year race history, and achieved the model's first podium finish. It sold for a staggering $7 million, setting a new record for the auction.
