Since the brilliant new Range Rover SUV went on sale at the end of last year, Land Rover has already introduced a new fuel-efficient V-6 option, added the smaller and sportier Range Rover Sport and showcased an advanced hybrid model that will eventually be headed our way. Now, the British automaker is expanding the lineup yet again, this time with a new long-wheelbase model. Unveiled to the world today at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, the new long-wheelbase Range Rover and Autobiography Black package are specced to impress.

Coming in for the 2014 model year, the new Range Rover Long-Wheelbase will bring with it a new Autobiography Black trim. The latter will be limited to around 100 units for the 2014 model year and be the most expensive model in Land Rover’s lineup. The first 25 will be built in a special Valloire White pearlescent paint.

For the long-wheelbase model, denoted by a small “L” badge on the tailgate and front fenders, engineers have managed to add around 8 inches to the wheelbase by stretching the Range Rover’s aluminum unibody structure. This translates to 5.5-inches more rear seat legroom than standard-wheelbase models and when equipped with the optional executive seating package, an increased seatback recline of 17 degrees. Buyers will also be able to opt for a massage function.

The Autobiography Black trim provides Land Rover with a model to counter a slew of new upmarket SUVs soon to be launched by Bentley, Lamborghini and Maserati. Destined to cost more than the $130k starting price of the current Range Rover Autobiography, the Range Rover Long-Wheelbase Autobiography Black will serve as the new flagship of the Land Rover brand and was developed by Jaguar Land Rover’s ‘Engineered To Order’ (ETO) personalization department.

On the outside, there a number of elements that give it a subtly distinctive character. A unique design and finish has been given to the front grille and side vents along with badging in black enamel and chrome. More black enamel is used for the tail-light surrounds and the vehicle also dons plenty of chrome and unique wheels measuring 21 inches across.

The interior is the real star, however, and has been appointed and finished with the highest quality leathers and materials. The Range Rover Long-Wheelbase Autobiography Black incorporates an individualized front and rear seating package with a bespoke seat cover design. Most surfaces are wrapped in leather and are contrasted by warm wood veneers and brushed stainless steel.

When buyers opt for the two individual rear seats, Autobiography Black trim includes electrically deployable tables covered in black leather with integrated USB charging sockets and cup holders. These pop out of a custom center console that stretches the length of the cabin and includes a chiller compartment.

The long-wheelbase variants will initially be available on the high-end Supercharged and Autobiography trim levels with either a three-across bench seat or individual rear seats with a center console. Further down the track, expect to see the Range Rover’s V-6 option and possibly the new hybrid powertrains offered. Note, in the U.S., the Autobiography Black trim will only be offered on long-wheelbase Range Rovers.

Deliveries of the 2014 Land Rover Range Rover Long-Wheelbase commence in the first quarter of next year. For more of the latest debuts at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show, head over to our dedicated hub.
