Porsche’s new Macan made its debut at the 2013 Los Angeles Auto Show last month but volume production of the sporty new crossover only got underway this month at Porsche’s plant in Leipzig, Germany. This video shows parts of the production process, from the point the body is welded together to its initial painting to the final point where the Porsche emblem is affixed to the hood.

Though the Macan shares its platform with the Audi Q5, so many modifications have been made that you’d never guess the two were related. Not only is the Macan slightly smaller than the Q5, its r rigidity is significantly higher. This is because the Macan’s front structure has been designed like that found in the 911 and Cayman sports cars.

Porsche is launching the Macan in more potent Macan S and Macan Turbo trim here in the U.S. Overseas, a Macan S Diesel has also been launched, and we’ll be seeing this model in showrooms eventually, where it will be positioned as the most affordable model in the Porsche lineup, even undercutting the $49,500 starting price of the Boxster. Sadly, the U.S. will be missing out on a new four-cylinder model that’s still in the works.
