Summer is coming to a close, and those lucky to have had some time off are likely back at the office now. But with the end of summer comes the first major auto show of the new model year, the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, press days for which kick off on Tuesday, September 10.

The biennial event in the German financial hub is one of the biggest on the automotive calendar, and it’s certainly the biggest of the European shows. Close to 80 brands will be present, from Alpina to ZF, and many will offer a world premiere or two.

The Motor Authority team will be present, too, bringing you all the latest info and live photos direct from the show floor once the action gets underway. In the meantime, here's our hand-picked list of some of the stars, as well as what we know so far about them.

And don't forget to bookmark our dedicated Frankfurt Auto Show page, as well as follow us on Facebook and Twitter to stay on top of it all.

Efficiency and connectivity are hallmarks of the Monza and are represented by an advanced extended-range electric drivetrain and a world-first LED projection display for the dash. Audi Sport quattro: The brand with the four rings will be celebrating its 30-year-old quattro sports car with a new concept based on the bones of its A5. Unlike a similar concept we saw in 2010, the new Sport quattro concept is said to preview a limited production model Audi will launch next year. It features a sophisticated hybrid setup pairing a twin-turbocharged V-8 with an electric motor, for a combined output of 700 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque. Power is directed through a modified eight-speed tiptronic automatic to all four wheels, helping the car accelerating to 62 mph in 3.7 seconds and onto a top speed of 190 mph.

The compact will be called the Q30 and is not due on the market until 2015. The concept is based on a new modular platform that will also spawn a 3-Series-sized sedan and a production version could be launched within the next two years. What the vehicles will be called is still up in the air, though we know Jaguar has registered “XQ” and “Q-Type” with the European Union's trademark agency. Given the automaker’s naming cadence, the new sedan is likely to be called the XQ while the crossover should get the Q-Type moniker.
