Following its official debut at this year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed, McLaren’s new 12C GT Sprint has gone on sale, priced from 195,000 British pounds (approximately $315,827). That may seem a lot for what is essentially a track toy (the car isn’t homologated for any racing series), but you are getting many of the features from the fully-fledged 12C GT3 race car in a reliable yet stupidly fast package.

The 12C GT Sprint is based on the road-going 12C supercar but has received extensive modifications from McLaren’s sports car racing department, McLaren GT. Unfortunately, those modifications mean the car is no longer street legal.

Technologies and systems already found on the 12C have been honed, including Brake Steer and the active McLaren Airbrake, while a recalibrated Proactive Chassis Control (PCC) system helps improve handling further and accounts for a ride height that is some 40 millimeters lower than standard.

Power comes from McLaren’s familiar twin-turbocharged 3.8-liter V-8, which matches the 616 horsepower of the 12C road car and is hooked up to the regular seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. Optimized oil and cooling systems are unique to this track special, however.

As mentioned, the car also shares a number of components with the 12C GT3 race car, including the FIA-approved safety roll cage, central cooling radiator and digital dash display. Many of the 12C’s luxuries have also been replaced by a racing seat with harness, a lightweight air-conditioning system and a carbon fiber dash. A fire extinguisher has also been fitted.

Styling upgrades on the 12C GT Sprint follow the McLaren mantra of ‘form following function,’ with each enhancement designed to optimize performance. Stability and dynamics are further enhanced through the aforementioned drop in ride height of 40 millimeters, while a more aggressive front bumper, GT3-inspired bonnet with radiator exit ducts and front wing louvers improve downforce.

Stopping power comes from racing-spec brake discs, which sit behind center-locking 19-inch wheels, shod with Pirelli tires. As with the 12C GT3, an on-board air jacking system is fitted to help make quick tire changes at the track.

The 12C GT Sprint is available from all official McLaren retailers worldwide or direct from McLaren GT. Note, the price mentioned isn’t subject to local taxes and duties. There are also a range of options available that will quickly inflate the price, each of which is designed to offer even greater levels of performance and individuality. Some items include a carbon fiber rear wing, a carbon front splitter and a polycarbonate windscreen.
