In the world of film, there are a handful of automobiles that have achieved an iconic almost cult-like status. Be it the Ghostbusters Ecto-1, the Audi S8 from Ronin, or even the Jeep from Jurassic Park, movie cars create movie car fans.

Two of the most memorable machines from the last few decades of filmmaking recently went up for auction, and two very lucky movie fans wound up with pieces of cinematic history: Ferris Bueller's Ferrari replica hit the Mecum auction block in Monterey, and the James Bond Lotus Elise submarine wound up crossing the RM auction stage.

The Ferris Bueller Ferrari is actually the very vehicle that got me "into cars" when I was a child, so it's pretty excellent to see someone coughing up serious dough to own it. Yes, we all know it's not an actual Ferrari, but this specific replica has been lovingly restored. Also, an actual 250 GT California is out of reach of even the more wealthy auction goers.

Here instead is a beautiful car with a movie history--and someone paid $230,000 to own it. Steep? Sure, but it will make an amazing driver's car, thanks to the 427-cubic-inch V-8 engine under the hood, which pumps out around 500 horsepower.

At the other end of the auction scale sits the James Bond Lotus Esprit submarine. This is one produced for the film The Spy Who Loved Me, and was discovered in an expired storage auction by a couple who bid blindly on the contents.

The car was restored and can still function as a submarine. That alone puts serious value behind the car, but the Bond provenance pushes said value even higher. That's why someone paid $966,560 to put their name on the title.

These are two iconic machines that fetched good money, and it's great to know that both will go to homes where they will be well cared for.
