Last weekend’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, as devastating as it was, proved to be an almost fairy tale-like event for the Porsche works squad, which made its official return to the legendary race after a 15-year hiatus.

After trailing Aston Martin in the GTE category, both in the Pro and Am classes, in the final stages of the race Porsche’s 2013 911 RSR race cars overtook the competition and brought home a double victory.

The result is sure to have unsettled teams in the top LMP1 category, which must have been watching Porsche’s performance very closely.

Why? Because the German sports car manufacturer will be competing in the LMP1 category from next year onwards, and with Formula One ace Mark Webber in tow. The Australian confirmed yesterday that he would be quitting F1 and his Red Bull Racing team to race with Porsche in the 2014 World Endurance Championship and the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

Porsche has now released a video signifying the win last weekend and the inextricable link it has with the annual race in Le Mans, which this year celebrated its 90th anniversary.

We now eagerly await next year’s season.
