The Lamborghini Calà, a concept car dreamed up by Italdesign Giugiaro as a possible replacement for the Jalpa, and unveiled for the first time in 1995, will be hitting public roads in the very near future.

The Calà will be taking part in the Grande Giro Lamborghini, an epic rally that will see Lamborghini owners from around the world travel more than 750 miles across Italy in their raging bulls.

The rally will also see some of the most beautiful Lamborghinis in history gather together, including the Calà, which will be driven by the same man who penned it, Fabrizio Giugiaro, current vice chairman and styling director of Italdesign.

According to Lamborghini, Fabrizio didn’t want to miss out on this unique occasion.

As mentioned, the striking concept was developed as a possible replacement for the Jalpa, which ended sales in 1988. Its design borrowed elements from the Miura and Countach, and its carbon fiber body was built completely by hand.

That body was anchored to an aluminum chassis thanks to the adoption of a new construction process utilizing folded and glued sheets. Power came from a mid-mounted, 4.0-liter V-10 rated at 372 horsepower and driving the rear wheels.

The project was disbanded prior to Lamborghini’s sale to the Volkswagen Group in 1999 though some elements of the Calà’s design carried over onto the car that would succeed it, the Gallardo.

Unlike production Lamborghinis, whose names are often related to the Spanish tradition of bull fighting, the name Calà was derived from the Piedmentese dialect of Northern Italy and meant “look over there.”

The Grande Giro Lamborghini anniversary rally will commence on May 7, the same day 50 years ago that Automobili Lamborghini S.p.A. was incorporated and the inaugural foundation stone laid at its factory in Sant’Agata Bolognese.
