The Mercedes-Benz CLA-Class is easily one of the most attractive cars in the compact class, particularly in its CLA45 AMG trim, but getting the car to look as good as it does was no easy feat. The video above features the designer in charge of the CLA’s exterior, Mark Fetherston, and he explains how all of the car’s complex surfaces were achieved.

It’s not often that we get a detailed explanation on why elements on a car were designed a certain way, so it’s well worth watching the video through to the end. If you’re after more design insights, a second video, posted below, has Fetherston explaining how he got into automotive design and what inspired him when penning the CLA.

The CLA-Class is the only Mercedes compact currently offered in the U.S. It won’t be alone for long, however, as the German automaker plans to launch two more compacts next year: the B-Class Electric and GLA-Class. Overseas, buyers also have the option of an A-Class hatchback and eventually Mercedes will launch one more compact car, a CLA Shooting Brake. Unfortunately, this more practical CLA isn’t expected to reach these shores.
