When it debuts at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show next week, the all-new 2014 Lexus IS sedan will become the first model in the U.S. to offer subscription-free traffic and weather updates.

The announcement was made this week at the 2013 Consumer Electronics Show taking place in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The traffic and weather updates will come via iBiquity’s HD Radio service and will be presented to occupants either on the new IS’ standard display screen or optional navigation system.

For IS models equipped with navigation, traffic and weather information will be obtained from both HD Radio stations and the cell phone network, with the latter relying on a smartphone being connected with the Lexus Enform infotainment and connectivity system.

For models without navigation, the traffic and weather information will be sourced exclusively from the HD Radio stations.

The new IS is coming onto the market with a sharp new design, a sporty chassis and upgraded engines. In the U.S. the car is expected to feature IS 250 and IS 350 variants once again, with the IS 250 getting a 2.5-liter V-6 rated at roughly 200 horsepower and the IS 350 getting the 306-horsepower 3.5-liter V-6 found in the GS 350.

A new IS 300h hybrid will be launched overseas but it’s not clear if Lexus plans to offer this model in the U.S.

Look for the 2014 Lexus IS in showrooms this summer, but in the meantime stay tuned for its debut in Detroit on January 15.
